LGBTQ History #1: The Premiere Episode of The L Word Airs on Showtime

Whether you were sitting in front of your television on January 18, 2004, or you stumbled upon The L Word during your own coming out process, you will never forget where you were when you saw your first episode of The L Word. For so many of us, The L Word was the first time we really saw lesbians on a television network. While the show did not have a varied enough cast to completely represent the complexities and diversities of our entire community, it did connect to so many of our own stories.

Who hasn’t been (or known) a Jenny in their life? An emotionally unstable gay girl locked inside a straight girl, only to be seduced and whisked away by a whimsical beauty? We saw same-gender-loving women like Bette and Tina growing their family. And of course…there was Shane. Who hasn’t fallen for a Shane in their lives?

For some of us, there wasn’t a Sunday that went by during the season that we weren’t glued in front of our TV sets. The L Word was truly a historic moment in television history for the lesbian community.

Do you remember the first time you saw The L Word?
