5 Questions for Sierra Smith

Sierra Smith is a young Maryland paralegal who teaches music to underprivileged children and adults in the D.C. metropolitan area during her spare time. She started her music career playing Alto Saxophone at the old age of 12 and under the guidance of her mentor, who offered her free music lessons as a teenager, attained a degree in music education. “This free musical advancement opened my realms of communication with others outside of my race and inspired me to want to pursue a degree in music education.”

Describe yourself in a six-word sentence.
A traditionalist in lesbian form (ha, five words! LOL)

What was the last thing you shared on social media?
Gym pics with my mother and girlfriend; my girlfriend is helping her with post-op therapy.

What do you think is the main challenge facing LGBTQ people in your community?
I believe the LGBTQ community tries very hard to fit into or be accepted into a society that was not built for them. We live what is considered to be an “alternative lifestyle” yet we keep putting heteronormative stamps on our lives.

What is your favorite LGBTQ business where you live?
I honestly do not know because I’m not aware of which are LGBTQ-owned and operated. Maybe they should put that on the front door? LOL

What advice do you have for people looking to be just like you?
Aah, so much… Let’s see, umm: “Haters gonna hate”, “Cs get degrees” and “What is meant for you will always be”.
