Stoney Michelli is one half of the Los Angeles-based duo behind Stuzo Clothing, a fashion line founded in 2010 to serve a clientele that is non-conforming and bold at heart. Michelli and business partner, Uzo Ejikeme, aimed to create a space in the fashion world where all are welcome without judgment. Most of their pieces are unisex or “genderless,” as they prefer to call it, because clothes don’t have private parts.
Describe yourself in a six-word sentence.
Remember to dream, even while awake.
What was the last thing you shared on social media?
A picture of me on the plane to Panama, drinking a beer and eating an empanada. As I write this, I’m sitting in a hammock in Panama and feel the breeze!
What do you think is the main challenge facing LGBTQ people in your community?
I believe that acceptance is always going to be the major problem in our community. Once people understand that we are all different but all human then we can live in peace.
What is your favorite LGBTQ business where you live?
Well I have to say, other than my own, Project Q is my favorite. The work that they do for LGBTQ youth is amazing and commendable. The owner Madin goes by a creed to ensure that the kids feel like they matter and can be all that they are.
What advice do you have for people looking to be just like you?
I encourage people to be the best they can be. Wanting to be like someone is not enough, you should strive to your best self. That’s the code I live by and I believe with that in mind, you will win.
