In the 1960s, the historic Howard Theatre in Washington, D.C. hosted an array of talent, including live drag performances. Now, D.C.’s own Shi-Queeta Lee has brought drag back to the venue with her recurring drag productions and musicals. Since August 2012, she has produced such shows as The Color Purple Twisted, Dreamgirls Twisted, The Wiz Twisted, Steel Magnolias vs. Waiting to Exhale, and multiple “Salute to the Divas” concerts.
This holiday season, Lee has put together a diverse cast of drag queens, drag kings, pre-teen performers, and dancers for the “Drag Salute to Motown” show on Sunday, December 7.
This magical world of illusion will include such Motown favorites as Diana Ross & the Supremes, Four Tops, Jackson 5, Mary Wells, Martha and the Vandellas, The Temptations, and many more. Lee has created a production that mimics a live documentary, where the crowd is engaged with the glitz of the music and dancing, but also learning about the history of Motown.
“We lip sync so well, you think you’re looking at the real thing,” Lee told The Frederick News-Post in an August 2014 interview. “We try to replicate costumes of the people…we spend a lot of time and money trying to emulate that artist to the full extent. It’s a Vegas-style show.”
The show not only includes two hours of show-stopping entertainment, but it also includes a dinner-style atmosphere where guests can order food and drinks throughout the evening.
There are currently limited amounts of tickets left for “A Drag Salute to Motown”. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door.
