Reel Affirmations, as a part of The DC centers Arts program, has been bringing innovative, inspirational films to the forefront for years, providing a platform to the LGBTQ community. This Friday, November 13, Reel Affirmations will once again be challenging the norm.
Women and the Word: The Revival Movie gives a much needed voice to the black queer woman, redefining the black aesthetic. Follow Jade Foster, T’ai Freedom Ford, Be Steadwell, Jonquille Rice and Elizah Turner as they venture across America sharing their creativity.
Women and the Word is based on a poetry tour originally called The Revival. What started as 50 people in a D.C. living room grew to an international creative movement. The movie goes behind the scenes of the tour giving concert footage, local features, interviews and candid conversations from the road trip. These five ladies prove to be a powerful connected force in their aspiration to reach audiences of various races and genders to share a collective history. “We value ourselves as black queer voices. Look at the creative movement now compared to 50 years ago. So much has changed. We want to build on the significance of those that came before us,” Shares producer Jade Foster.
Women and the Word: The Revival Movie eloquently dives into deep conversations on gender expression, sexuality, poetry, history, relationships, the significance of literacy in the black community, family, professionalism, the challenges of being a full-time creative, and much more. The film seamlessly pieces stories together to connect with and touch the hearts of the audience. Come Friday to get a chance to witness this profound film and talk with the ladies that are making history. Jade the producer, Sekiya Dorsett the director, Jonquille aka Solsis and B. Steady will be available for a Q & A after the show.
