Hello you sassy sirens! Spring is here!
Time to get to the beach and see what’s new!
Let’s start with chocolate and wine – what’s not to love? The next big event is the 26th Annual Chocolate Festival where top restaurants compete to bring you the best brownies, cakes, candies, cookies, pies and more. All this deliciousness can be found at the Atlantic Sands Hotel on the Boardwalk on April 2. That afternoon is the Teller Wines Expo at Lula Brazil where you can choose from 100 different wines, sample international cuisine, and enjoy live music.
You certainly won’t want to miss CAMP Rehoboth Women’s FEST featuring four days of fun beginning April 7. From pickleball to dancing, concerts, book signings, workshops and more – this event attracts well over 2000 women to the beach every year and just gets bigger and better. On April 10 you can catch your favorite author, Fay Jacobs reading Aging Gracelessly: 50 Shades of Fay. The performance is based on Jacobs’ memoirs, columns, Rehoboth’s gay history and the fight for marriage equality.
Other April events include the Delaware Resorts Home Expo, the Annual Dewey Beach Brewfest, the Dewey/Rehoboth Beach Bacon Fest (I kid you not), and the Bug & Bud Festival in historic downtown Milford.
May attractions include the Dewey Beach Arts Festival (May 7); the 21st Annual Lewes British Motorcar Show (May 7); Spring Sidewalk Sales in Rehoboth Beach and Lewes; and the 13th Annual Horseshoe Crab & Shorebird Festival (May 28).
If bacon and brews aren’t tempting enough, there are several new restaurants to savor, including Chesapeake & Maine, the latest Dogfish eatery featuring seafood and several cocktails on tap, including the Moscow Mule! The casually elegant Heirloom is now open in Lewes, offering hyper-seasonal food, artisan breads and house made sea salts. Seriously! The chef makes his own salt. And, the bread is a religious experience…trust me on this. We also have a new wine bar in Milton called Bacchus – you’ll love how they’ve renovated this historical building. Their Mediterranean flatbread pizza is superb and their house salad (The Bacchus) with its champagne vinaigrette is absolutely divine. Another new favorite of mine is the Forgotten Mile Ale House on Route 1 in Rehoboth. They have excellent Bloody Marys!
D.C.’s own DJ Nan and wife Kris Martino will open Java Jukebox, a coffee lounge and place for entertainment and socializing in Rehoboth Beach.
New to Tanger Outlets are Lululemon (yoga clothes and running gear); Torrid (the fastest growing retailer for women sizes 12 to 28 – I LOVE this store); Christopher & Banks (women’s apparel); and Tumi (travel accessories).
Since your last visit, the Film Society has opened the Rehoboth Beach Cinema Art House in Lewes. One of the highlights this year will be National Theatre Live, a project by London’s National Theatre that broadcasts British theater live from the London stage to cinemas around the world.
More new restaurants and festivals are on the way, so I’m sure we’ll see you soon, here at the beach!
