Opinion: The Best LGBTQ TV Programs

Basketball scene from The L Word

Years ago, there were hardly any good TV programs featuring LGBTQ characters, but luckily there are a lot more readily available these days. What is certain as well, is that the storylines and quality of the shows have improved significantly. We no longer have to suffer those stereotypical roles and repeated storylines.

Here is a roundup of some of the best TV programs with LGBTQ characters and storylines.

The L Word
This breakthrough series started airing in 2004 and is thought by many to be the most realistic depiction of lesbian relationships and social circles. The large number of lesbian characters in the series ensured there was a large variation from other programs that focused on more stereotypical roles. The series covers a whole range of real life events such as the process of a same sex couple trying for children, to the wild sexual antics of the popular character of Shane. For one of the first times ever, there were well-known guest stars appearing in a lesbian drama series. Guests included Cybil Shepherd, Sandra Bernhard and perhaps more unusually, Snoop Dog. The L Word is a must watch for anyone looking for good quality lesbian drama.

Queer as Folk
This series originated in the UK and is based on the lives of a group of gay males filmed mostly on Manchester’s gay scene. The program’s main character Stuart is played by Aiden Gillen, who went on to star in Game of Thrones and many other popular TV roles. Stuart and his friends frequent the gay bars and clubs of Manchester and get into all kinds of trouble. Storylines vary from the serious nature of the struggles faced by young gay males when they first come out, to the ridiculous nature of escaping a would-be one-night stand via a first story window. Other hard storylines include the fatal consequences of drug use by one of the characters. Drug use is a common occurrence on the clubbing scene and if you are looking for support, Georgia Drug Detox Atlanta can help you. The UK series was later used as a basis for its US series of the same name.

Orange is the New Black
Whilst there is a big mix of sexualities in this prison based series, OITNB has become widely popular and follows the exploits of a number of lesbian characters. The two main characters, Piper and Alex, are involved in a relationship at different parts of the series. The appearance of the very famous model/DJ/actress Ruby Rose as the character Stella also increased the viewing figures somewhat. There are some great characters and storylines in this program and it is easy to see why it is so popular in the TV ratings.

These are just three of the best LGBTQ TV programs that have been aired in the last decade, and there are loads more with great LGBTQ storylines that you can enjoy such as Empire, Modern Family, Glee and now even Supergirl!
