The creators behind “Camp Belvidere” have started a kickstarter campaign to get support from the LGBT women’s community and our allies.
Astrid Ovalles, the Artistic Director and Anna Kolantis, the Technical Director have come together to tell the story of a lesbian romance set in the late 1950’s. The story follows Rose (Molly Way); a bold and vibrant young woman and leader at Camp Belvidere, who over the years has developed an unlikely friendship with the Camp Nurse. Gin (Astrid Ovalles), the Camp Nurse, is a composed and well-traveled woman, who has lived a lonesome, closeted life, with the belief that there is no hope of romantic happiness for her. The story is about emotional growth, mutual attraction, and the role reversal that occurs between the characters.
Kolantis is a full-time film editor based in Richmond, VA and a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University. Ovalles is an actor, painter, and film director in New York City. According to the their website, “Their mission is to tell real stories that speak to a real audience. They know people, they know relationships, and they have an infinite curiosity about how to use the film medium in creative and innovative ways.”
One of their kickstarter backers states, “I think the world needs many, many more stories about women falling in love with women. I can’t wait to see it.” Kolantis and Ovalles hope that everyone else agrees. The filmmakers hope to enter the 33-minute long film in several film festivals across the nation.
