When writer and director Wendy Jo Carlton created a lesbian character who was unpredictable and somewhat cranky, she never imagined that the new web series would receive over 30 million views online. The Easy Abby series filled a void that was missing from stereotypical “lesbian” shows and films.
After the first season, viewers were craving more from lead character Abby and her cast of friends and love interests. With the popularity of the series, the cast and crew is back on set and need your help. The Easy Abby team has launched a campaign to raise $8,000 to complete season two. The funds will go toward stipends for the SAG union cast and a small crew. Carlton also jokes that the funds will also go to “strong coffee and quality Chapstick”.
“This is truly independent filmmaking. It’s funny. It’s fresh. It’s practically a free “How to Get the Girl” class,” says Carlton. “Plus we need more women-driven entertainment that doesn’t have to answer to or rely on mainstream gate keepers. There’s a need for a lot more female, LGBT and all-around complex characters onscreen and we’re bringing them to you.”
