The 36th Annual GLAAD Media Awards honored the best of LGBTQ+ media on March 27 in Los Angeles. The show, hosted by Michael Urie (Ugly Betty), will stream exclusively on Hulu beginning Saturday, April 12.
There were over 300 nominees for over 40 awards. Programs of the Walt Disney Company (owner of outlets including ABC, Hulu, Disney+, ESPN, and FX) received 28 nominations, more than any other platform. Netflix was the streaming service with the highest number of nominations (22).
Wicked star Cynthia Erivo received the Stephen F. Kolzak Award for a “LGBTQ media professional who has made a significant difference in raising visibility and promoting acceptance of LGBTQ people and issues.” It’s worth watching her five-minute acceptance speech.
“I know this event is to celebrate the work and I am endlessly grateful for that honor and for this celebration, but the real work is making the ground we leave in our wake level enough for the next person who finds their way to the path we have made,” she said.
Grammy-winner Doechii won Outstanding Music Artist. She spoke with the Gay Times last year about her identity: “I always knew I was gay. I’m currently bisexual. I am with a woman now and I have always known that I loved women.”
“The support and love I’m feeling as I accept this award from GLAAD is overwhelming, uplifting and—as I move forward in my life and career—enabling,” she said in her award acceptance speech. “It’s also a beacon to other aspiring artists to not let anyone ever block your dreams. Stay connected with each other. Stay passionate. Stay unapologetic.”

Only the 10 awards below were announced from the stage, with presenters including Lil Nas X, Marissa Bode (Wicked), and Lisa Ann Walter (Abbott Elementary, The Parent Trap). Bobby Berk, Wayne Brady, Sophia Bush, Glennon Doyle, Hannah Einbinder, Patti LuPone, Dylan Mulvaney, Zachary Quinto, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, JoJo Siwa, Lena Waithe, and Abby Wambach made appearances as well.
