Leigh and Ellie talk about the Lifetime’s lesbian Christmas rom-com Under the Christmas Tree for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. This movie stars Elise Bauman as Alma and Tattiawna Jones as Charlie and is the very first lesbian holiday movie Lifetime has ever produced.
The majority of the cast and crew for Under the Christmas Tree are part of the LGBTQ community. It’s so nice watching a queer movie that has queer people both in front of and behind the cameras. Even the wardrobe is gay culture – Alma and Charlie wear big jackets over hoodies and plenty of button downs. In true Lifetime holiday fashion, the movie is a super wholesome and adorable romance. Their families are supportive and there’s not an ounce of homophobia in sight. There’s some conflict over getting a Christmas tree for the governor, but overall the angst is very mild. This movie is very gay and is everything we’ve ever wanted for a lesbian Christmas movie.
At the end of the episode, stick around to hear our original holiday song based on Under the Christmas Tree titled “Underneath the Christmas Tree” written by Leigh Holmes Foster and performed by Ellie Brigida.
