On May 13, the LGBT Fallen Heroes Fund will hold their 3rd Annual LGBT Fallen Heroes Memorial Service at Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C. at 3 p.m. This year they will honor six LGBT Fallen Heroes; two police officers, two firefighters, and two members of the military.
Founded by R. Scott Gunn, the goal of the LGBT Fallen Heroes Fund is to identify and honor those LGBT police, firefighters, military, and EMS that have given their lives in service to their communities and give recognition to their survivors. Many LGBT couples still do not have the right to marry and if an officer is killed in the line of duty or on deployment, the surviving partner and family are often left out of any recognition or support: excluded from memorial services, denied financial support, and possibly shunned by the agency and the community.
The May 13 memorial service is just the beginning of a week of several fundraising events. On Wednesday, May 14 there will be a screening of “Heroes Behind the Badge”. The film is a documentary featuring some of the brave men and women of law enforcement who put their lives on the line and survived, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice. According to the website, “this inspiring documentary will change the way we look at the men and women of law enforcement and highlight the unselfish acts of bravery they commit each day in the line of duty.”
The Brixton will host the 4th Annual CopCakes for a Cause at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14. It will be an evening of wine, desserts, and a silent auction benefiting the Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS).
The LGBT Fallen Heroes Funds’ fundraising efforts help raise money towards the expenses associated with the annual Fallen Heroes Memorial Service. For a full list of fundraising events, visit www.lgbtfallenheroesweek.org.
