Hundreds will gather in Maryland to support trans equality

Later today hundreds of Marylanders will gather at Lawyer’s Mall in support of the Fairness for All Marylanders Act of 2014.  This bill will update state law to include transgender individuals in the state’s anti-discrimination laws.

Speaking at the rally will be the bill’s two primary sponsors, Senator Rich Madaleno and Delegate Luke Clippinger. Other speakers include Delegate Bonnie Cullison, Shannon Minter (National Center for Lesbian Rights), Sara Wilkinson (Maryland NOW), Bonnita Spikes, Hyattsville Councilmember Patrick Paschall and Keith Thirion (Equality Maryland).

After the rally attendees will meet with senators and delegates to urge them to vote for SB 212/HB 1265.

“Transgender Marylanders have waited too long for the General Assembly to pass this common-sense bill that allows individuals to work and live, free of legal discrimination,” says Equality Maryland’s Executive Director Carrie Evans. “This is one area that Maryland is not the leader in. We are woefully behind many jurisdictions who have these protections. There is overwhelming public support for this bill in Maryland, there is never an excuse for inaction when it comes to discrimination, it is time for the General Assembly to get this bill passed.”
