After almost 30 years of being part of the Washington, D.C. LGBT nightlife scene, Remington’s Nightclub will close its doors on Monday, April 14. The last happy hour, taking place 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. will be a chance for guests to reminiscence and celebrate a D.C. staple one last time.
Cathy Nagy who started the first ladies night at Remington’s in 1998 is looking forward to getting together with past patrons to celebrate what she calls “an end of an era”. Nagy has been working at Remington’s as their events coordinator and bartender. She was also named their “Woman of the Year” in 1999.
“For me, it’s very sad. I’ve been there for 15 years,” says Nagy. “My girls have grown-up and now bring their friends to the bar. For me, it’s an end of an era.”
Tonight’s last hurrah will not only mark the end of an era, but also marks the third anniversary of Steve Smith’s passing. Smith was the founder and owner of Remington’s for 26 years. Smith purchased Remington’s in 1985 when it was called Equus, and later expanded the venue into the adjacent building.
Remington’s is well-known for being a country Western bar that hosted karaoke nights, line dancing, and various fundraisers. Over the past two years the venue has become home to hip-hop nights, drag shows, exotic dancer events, and Latin nights. Though the venue was known as a predominantly men’s bar, many staff members and patrons agree that the bar never divided the community.
“It didn’t matter who you were. Everyone was welcome,” says Nagy.
Remington’s last happy hour takes place Monday, April 14 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. at 639 Pennsylvania Ave SE, Washington, D.C. Guests can expect a retro and throwback atmosphere with music, drink specials, and karaoke.
