The Mayor’s Office of GLBT Affairs recently announced the winners of its third annual Sheroes of the Movement Awards. In honor of Women’s History Month, the Office of GLBT Affairs has joined with the Mayor’s Office on Women’s Policy & Initiatives, the Mayor’s Office of Community Affairs and Tagg Magazine to honor these three lesbian, bisexual or queer women, who have made significant contributions to the LGBT movement and community in the District. Nominations for the awards were submitted by the members of the Mayor’s GLBT Advisory Committee, who also selected the winners.
This year’s winners are highly accomplished local advocates and leaders from the community. This year’s winners are: Cathy Chu, Youth Leadership Manager at SMYAL, Amy Nelson, Supervising Attorney at Whitman-Walker Health’s Legal Services Program, and Kelley Robinson, Assistant Director for Youth Engagement at Planned Parenthood.
“It feels really nice to be recognized for work that I believe in,” says Chu. “I’m really lucky that I have been able to find places like SMYAL and APIQS that give me the chance to be involved in communities and movements, so I definitely think that I wouldn’t be getting this award if I didn’t find these groups.”
The awards will be presented by Mayor Vincent C. Gray at a reception on Friday, March 21, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Fannie Mae Conference Center, located at 4000 Wisconsin Avenue, N.W. Reservations and valid photo identification are required to attend the event. You can RSVP with your name to lgbt@dc.gov by March 18.
