On Wednesday, January 18 at 6 p.m., WERK for Peace, Disrupt J20, and hundreds of community members will take to Mike Pence’s neighborhood to throw a queer dance party.
WERK for Peace is a queer-based grassroots movement that uses dance to promote peace. The organization is comprised of queer activists who believe that the dance floor should be “a safe space where all of us, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, can love and express ourselves.”
Mike Pence has a track record of vehemently opposing LGBTQ rights and equality. He has supported conversion therapy and signed into law an anti-LGBT “religious liberty” bill that was subject to harsh criticism. WERK for Peace and Disrupt J20 hope the dance party sends a strong message that these forms of homophobia and transphobia are not acceptable in this country (and internationally).
“As he prepares to take office as the Vice President of the United states, we want to make sure Daddy Pence knows that the queer and trans community is watching. We refuse to allow hate and fear to dictate homo/transphobic policies against our community,” says Firas Nasr, founding organizer of WERK for Peace. “Through dance, we choose to celebrate and embrace our differences and to love one another rather than allow those differences to break us apart.”
