In a few words, how would you describe yourself?
I’m a storyteller who’s really just trying to figure things out.
Your favorite hangout spots.
Anywhere in Montréal! And of course the bar at Mac’s in Ptown anytime, and the Aqua Bar in the summertime.
Favorite guilty pleasure.
Fresh flowers in my house. I know that it’s wasteful, but it lifts my spirits!
Favorite quote.
“If you can write the stories for a society, it doesn’t matter who writes the laws.”
Who is your biggest influence? And why?
Yikes, so many! Reading Mary Stewart is better than any writing class, and from her I learned to make a milieu come alive for readers. Phil Rickman and Tana French are also brilliant writers who have influenced my writing for years.
Favorite event.
Any of Ptown’s theme weeks! (I’m starting a mystery series that features a murder during each: starting with Death of a Bear this June and Murder at Fantasia Fair in September…)
Do you have any regrets in life?
Only about 18 million! Seriously, who doesn’t? We’re all constantly making choices and some of those choices are better than others. But I’m very happy with who I am and where I am and what I’m doing in life, so perhaps the regrets are as important as the achievements.
Favorite lesbian celebrity.
My friend Zoe Lewis.
Any fun facts or anything else you want our readers to know?
I’m not all that fascinating, really—I love to read, and I love to write, and I travel a lot (which brings them all together somewhat).
