Women You Should Meet (W.Y.S.M.): Sarah K. Slocum

Sarah K. Slocum, Women You Should Meet

Sarah K. SlocumCity, State: Arlington, VA
Age: 34
Profession: Badass by day and bartender by night

In a few words, how would you describe yourself?
I’m pretty shy with new people. I like making people laugh, and given how often my friends are doing that, I think it’s safe to call myself funny. My shyness is misread often, and I’ve been told I’m intimidating. In reality, I’m a big softy who will do mostly anything to take care of my people.

Your favorite hangout spots.
Currently, my weekends are Mondays and Tuesdays, so I have to get creative when it comes to hanging out. I’m not too big on crowds. I love a chill Tuesday night at Atomic Billiards with my friend Cori behind the bar. The “divier” the bar, the better. I love being outside, be it at a dog park with two and four-legged friends, or those moments when I can escape to a cabin to hike, watch stars, and cook meat over an open flame.

Favorite guilty pleasure.
I’m a huge fan of apple pie. I also catch hell for my love of Dick Tracy. Is he really not as awesome as me and my dog believe he is? I mean come on! He had Tess and Breathless!

Favorite quote.
“Here’s to cheating, stealing, fighting and drinking. If you cheat, may you cheat death; if you steal, may you steal a woman’s heart; if you fight, may you fight for a brother; and if you drink, may you drink with me!”

Who is your biggest influence? And why?
My father, hands down. Everything about him radiates kindness, wisdom, and patience. He always seems to know the right thing to do and he does it. He’s taught me that the only time you should hold out is when it’s your hand, to help another up. I try to live up to the lessons he’s taught me. If I ever become half the human being he is, I’d consider my life a win.

Favorite event.
Is Halloween considered an event? I like an event spurred by spontaneity, rather than planned out. I’ve worked in the industry for so long, that I recognize how planning ahead can add pressure to something that should be fun. I’d much rather get a call from someone saying, “Let’s call out for a few days and go to the beach!”

Do you have any regrets in life?
I try my best not to regret anything. I try to believe in fate and that every choice we make places us on the path we are supposed to be on. It can definitely feel like a struggle, understanding that patience is sometimes necessary in getting what you want. I work on recognizing that good things come to those who wait.

Favorite lesbian celebrity.
I don’t have a favorite. I do enjoy lesbians that break stereotypes through comedy and good will. Ellen, of course. Who wouldn’t be inspired by her and Portia’s love affair? Kate McKinnon and Cameron Esposito, whose comedy transcends sexuality and are just hands down hysterical. And lest I forget Louis C.K…he’s totally a lesbian!

Any fun facts or anything else you want our readers to know?
Safe sex is sexy! It’s easy to take for granted that lesbians can’t get pregnant, but we CAN contract STIs. If you are ever in doubt, don’t let your pride get in the way, go to the Whitman-Walker Health clinic (or any other) and get tested. Sometimes the best lesson is the one you learn yourself, but you can’t learn if you don’t take the time to. Be smart and make good decisions. I realize that comes across as “preachy” but it’s true. Above all else, stay awesome!
