W.Y.S.M.: Sheila Alexander-Reid

Name: Sheila Alexander-Reid
City, State of Residence: Ellicott City, MD
Age: Old enough to know better.
Profession: Director of Strategic Engagement for Washington City Paper and Radio Show Producer and Host on WPFW.

Website: washingtoncitypaper.com and wpfw.org.

In a few words, how would you describe yourself?
An insomniac, with a knack for marketing and sales, who’s passionate about equality, the NFL, my family, and making a difference.

Your favorite hangout spots:
WPFW (89.3 FM), Ben’s Next Door, Marvin, The Howard Theatre, and Smoke & Barrel.

Favorite guilty pleasure:
A Five Guys burger.

Favorite quote:
“I don’t mind people with baggage, as long as it’s packed neatly, and they’re working on it.”

Who is your biggest influence? And why?
My mother, Dr. Clarice Reid, is my biggest influence. She’s accomplished, yet humble; brilliant, yet approachable; and fierce, yet vulnerable. She taught me at a very young age that life isn’t fair, so expect adversity. “Don’t let your adversity or mistakes define you. You will be defined by the way you deal with these things.”

Favorite event:
My Big Fat Gay Wedding on July 20, 2013.

Do you have any regrets in life?
Yes, I regret being too judgmental. I’m a Scorpio and tend to hold grudges, but I’m working on it. 🙂

Favorite lesbian celebrity:
Living: Rachel Maddow, MSNBC television host and political commentator.
Deceased: Lorraine Hansberry, playwright, A Raisin in the Sun.

Any fun facts or anything else you want our readers to know?
I love black memorabilia; any song by Alice Smith; and binge-watching shows like Scandal, Orange Is the New Black, House of Cards, and Breaking Bad on Netflix.
