Power couple Montana State Representative Zooey Zephyr and award-winning journalist Erin Reed wed in Missoula, Montana on December 14.

“In many ways, our wedding day truly began two years earlier, on the White House lawn, as Sam Smith’s voice filled the air with Stay With Me,” Reed wrote on her blog. “It was the day the Respect for Marriage Act was signed. As we stood together, wrapped in the weight of that moment, Zooey leaned into my ear and whispered that she would marry me someday. Between then and now, there was so much more for us to experience, endure, and build together to arrive at this magical morning.”

The couple married in a ceremony at the wooden hall at the Missoula County Fairgrounds, surrounded by family and friends who had traveled from as far as Europe to be there. Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD, officiated. The event was full of dancing, laughter, connection, and love.

The guest list included a who’s who of other trans historymakers: film and TV director/producer/writer Lilly Wachowski, athlete Lia Thomas, and Colorado state Rep. Brianna Titone.

“Every second of that day is etched into my heart forever. And every vow I made—from promising you a gentle love to promising to be a good mom to our son—will be at the center of all I do,” Zephyr wrote on social media. “As I said in my vows, I am yours I am yours I am yours.”

“Our wedding is set against the backdrop of an uncertain time and the work we do for the people we care about—a fitting reflection of a relationship that grew from the same environment,” Reed wrote. “But in moments like this, Zooey and I do what we do best: we plant our flag together, for those we care about, and face the future side by side, grounded in an unimaginable love.”

Those wishing to send a gift to the couple can donate to their honeymoon fund here or give to one of these three charitable organizations in their name: Forward Montana, Blue Mountain Clinic, or the Poverello Center.
