Neveah groaned as she looked at her watch. She could feel her social battery dropping dangerously low, and all she could think of was muting her phone and getting home to her bathtub. There was just one problem: Amber.

Neveah’s work bestie had invited her to her Big Gay Friendsgiving when she heard that Neveah didn’t have a holiday crew yet in LA. It wasn’t until they’d arrived that Amber confessed her real reason for inviting Neveah: she’d needed emotional support to see JJ, a hot stud she’d been crushing on for weeks. Neveah was ready to help, until she realized that JJ was very much Not Over Her Ex. As Amber comforted JJ and hung on her every word, Neveah had bravely entertained herself—meeting new people, trying new foods, and making conversation—but hours had passed, everyone else had gone home, and Neveah was beyond ready to dip.

As she stood in the kitchen, debating when to yank Amber away, Neveah strained her ear to hear if Amber was making any progress.

“..And it hurt me bad, you know? Like it was 18 months ago, but I never felt that kinda pain,” JJ lamented.

Neveah rolled her eyes, Let her go Amber! Instead, she heard Amber respond, practically a purr, “Ohmygosh, poor baby! How long were you two together?”

JJ paused, “I don’t know, like two months? But she felt like forever.”

Neveah snorted and whispered under her breath, “We’re lesbians, everyone feels like forever.”

“True, but sometimes they are.” Neveah jumped and turned to find the evening’s hosts behind her. The otherworldly couple radiated an intoxicating energy and Neveah had been trying not to stare all evening.

Gwen was statuesque, tall and curvy, with long copper-colored box braids she wore in curls down her back. Her wife, Jules, was a little shorter, and sported a black bob that showcased her high cheekbones. Jules’ oversized jeans hung off of her hips, revealing a strip of skin and a golden belly ring.

Neveah swallowed in embarrassment. “Oh my gosh,” Neveah turned bright red, “I’m sorry you heard that. I’m not usually the catty friend.”

A big brassy laugh tore through Gwen as she looked deep into Neveah’s eyes. “It wasn’t entirely untrue,” she acquiesced.

“Yeah, I thought I’d found Miss Forever like four times before I met Gwen,” Jules gently reached out a hand to hold Gwen’s. “Besides, JJ has taken it a little too far over her ex. They barely knew each other, so this is kind of a lot.” Jules’ eyes flicked out to the sliding door to make sure JJ and Amber couldn’t hear them.

Gwen rolled her eyes, “JJ can’t hear us over her pouting. Don’t worry.” Gwen gently nudged Jules with her hip before lowering her voice and leaning in towards Neveah, “You don’t seem like much of a JJ fan.”

Neveah opened her mouth to answer, but she was breathless this close to Gwen. The smell of strawberries wafted off of Gwen’s hair and it was all Neveah could do to act normal. Luckily, Gwen saved Neveah from having to answer by pulling a joint and a lighter out of her pocket, “Want to sneak away to the bedroom and tell us about it over a smoke?”
