Poet and spoken-word artist Andrea Gibson has died at the age of 49. Gibson died of ovarian cancer and the world is less bright.
In a post to Gibson’s social media accounts on July 14, their wife and friend, Megan Falley, poetically shared the news of Gibson’s passing. Falley said that Gibson was surrounded by their wife, four ex-girlfriends, their parents, dozens of friends, and their three dogs at 4:16 AM when they died.
“Though Andrea desperately wished to have lived a longer life, they could not have possibly lived a fuller one,” the post says. “One of the last things Andrea said on this place was, ‘I fucking loved my life.’”
Gibson was with her Falley for about 10 years. Falley is also a poet and spoken-word artist. Falley proposed to Gibson in August 2022 soon after a recurrence of Gibson’s cancer. Gibson wrote of the proposal, “There is no one I’d rather be looking at in this life than Meg. She is my wildest dream come true.”
A documentary about Gibson and Falley’s journey of love through cancer, Come See Me in the Good Light, won the Festival Favorite Award at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival where it premiered. Tig Notaro and Brandi Carlile are among the film’s producers. It will begin streaming on Apple TV+ in fall 2025.
Gibson was the Poet Laureate of Colorado and author of six books of poetry. Their work tackled gender identity, chronic pain, sexuality, and mortality with beauty, curiosity, humor, and awe.
“In the end, their heart was covered in stretch marks,” the announcement ends.
