On June 22, Busboys & Poets will host a panel discussion on gender. The “Challenging the Binary” discussion is a part of the ongoing Zami series, a monthly gender and sexuality series that seeks to energize community discourse regarding the intersections of sexuality, gender, race and human rights by bringing together artists, scholars, and community members to talk about their work as people committed to LGBTQ and feminist values and action. Zami is named after biomythography of Audre Lorde, and seeks to honor her legacy as a fearless lesbian poet, author and educator.
Panelists will include members of Casa Ruby and the LGBTQ Task Force. Attendees are encouraged to engage with panelists and other guests.
“Our panel members along the transgender continuum will share their stories and encourage a lively discussion. There has been a lot of talk regarding transgender people and their experiences after Caitlyn Jenner shared her journey with America,” says events and marketing coordinator Angie Head. “Our panel will celebrate the transgender folks who have been around, fighting, surviving, living and thriving long before she came out”.
The Challenging the Binary discussion takes place Monday, June 22 at Busboys & Poets located at 5th and K NW, Washington, D.C. 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
