Ilana Glazer spoke with The Independent on how their 2021 pregnancy helped her realize she was nonbinary.
“Being pregnant on paper was the most female thing I could ever do, but it actually highlighted both the masculine and feminine inside of me.”
“For so long, my masculinity felt like something I had to hide or make a joke of, and my femininity was something that felt like drag,” they said. “There was always this element of comedy to it that was limiting my genuine personal experience. Then this gift of being pregnant made space for me to be real with myself.”
When asked if labeling themself has changed anything, Glazer said, “It’s more a point in the process of a long journey of self-actualization. I’m moving through the world in a way that’s truer.”
Glazer has been out as queer for pretty much their whole career, but it wasn’t until this year they publicly mentioned their nonbinary identity. In January they told The Mercury News “ I’m confident today in my identity as a queer non-binary woman.”
In a 2020, they told The Hollywood Reporter, they referred to themself as cis.
“The gender norms thing is interesting to me. I am so grateful to the trans community, the LGBTQ community and trans people of color. They paved the way for everyone else who maybe appears like they fit in more,” they said. “They paved the way for everyone else to feel more fluid within themselves. And I’m really grateful for those conversations because, while as a cis white person, I have relative bodily safety that’s afforded to me because of the system, I really appreciate those conversations that have been coming up, and I appreciate that I can say that these days I feel like a third dude.”
Their May 2024 movie Babes, in which Glazer plays a pregnant woman, is now available to rent or buy through online streaming services.
