Old School Dance Party to Benefit Aging LGBT Adults

Mary’s House recently announced their annual Old School Dance Party schedule for Saturday, May 24 from 3 – 8 p.m. Last year’s Old School Dance Party brought over 100 members of the community together for a joyous multigenerational celebration for a good cause.

This year’s dance party will feature the first Annual Celebration of Life Award, given to acknowledge and celebrate the life of an individual who has been instrumental in decreasing social isolation for LGBT older adults and has been a constant presence in their lives. Guests can expect great soul food, drinks, door prizes, and music for all ages. Music will include everything from The Whispers to Michael Jackson to Marvin Gaye, and of course a Soul Train line.

“Our mission is to provide LGBT affordable housing so that older adults will have a place to live that they can bring ‘their whole selves’ and not go back into the closet,” says Dr. Imani Woody, Founder of Mary’s House for Older Adults. “We have acquired the land, designed the plans and are working with a developer to move forward. And we are one of seven entities in the country looking to provide this type of housing.”

Woody has dedicated her time to building the first affordable, LGBT-friendly housing for older adults in the D.C.metropolitan area. The fundraiser event will help ongoing efforts to raise the approximate $800,000 needed to build the home.

The Old School Dance Party takes place on Saturday, May 24 at Westminister Presbyterian Church, 400 I St SW, Washington, D.C. 3 – 8 p.m. All ticket and cash bar sales benefit the building of Mary’s House for Older Adults, Inc., a first of its kind affordable housing for LGBT older adults in Washington, D.C.
