As I was reflecting on the celebrities who have joined our ranks in 2020, I noticed that several of them have played queer characters on television. While queer media representation on Glee and Pretty Little Liars helped me speak my truth, in some of these instances, it seems that playing LGBTQ characters had the same effect on these actresses.
On October 14, The CW will debut Supergirl character Dreamer, also known as Nia Nal, on the show’s fourth season. What’s more, the character will be portrayed by actress Nicole Maines, who is transgender herself. To put this in context, we sat down with Erika Abad, a gender and sexuality studies professor whose research and courses look closely at the nature of LGBTQ portrayal in film and television.
