As Beyoncé says, pretty hurts, and in the case of femme presentation, it hurts us in ways that others in our community may not even know or notice. Sure—being a femme lesbian has its perks and privileges, but it certainly doesn’t come without its fair share of disadvantages.

Last weekend, I had the opportunity to attend The Queer Fashion History Symposium. I spent six and half hours preparing for this event.
What began as a one-day LGBTA community block party on 20th Street NW is now the nation’s third-largest Pride event, featuring more than a week’s worth of entertainment, activities, and festivities. Since its inception in 1975, the Capital Pride event has provided rich opportunities for Washington, D.C.’s queer community and allies to celebrate, motivate, and support our diversity.
