HRC Foundation’s Press Secretary makes history at the Democratic National Convention

Four years ago, Sarah McBride—the American University student body president—embraced her truth and announced to the university that she was a proud transgender woman. Since then, McBride has become a powerful voice in the trans community, committed to fighting for equality.

On July 28 around 6 p.m., McBride became the first openly transgender person to give a speech at a major-party convention. She was introduced by Rep. Sean Maloney, the first openly gay Congress member from the state of New York.

McBride opened up about her late husband and trans activist Andrew. His passing taught her “that every day matters when it comes to building a world where every person can live their life to the fullest.”

Before leaving the stage, she made sure to give a ringing endorsement for Hillary Clinton stating, “She will work with us to pass the Equality Act, to combat violence against transgender women of color, and to end the HIV and AIDS epidemic once and for all.”
