Life is full of trials and tribulations. Often, you think that you have overcome the biggest hurdle only for a new, even bigger one to present itself. The secret to making it through these trying times is knowing when and how to seek the right help. Below is a list of the most important times throughout your life to seek out assistance from a knowledgeable and understanding third party.

Struggling with self-acceptance

It is common knowledge that individuals within the LGBTQ community have a difficult time achieving and maintaining self-acceptance. With so many people out there claiming that what you do and who you are is ‘wrong,’ this inner struggle comes as no surprise. However, abundant self-love is essential to a happy, healthy life. Furthermore, if you are unable to accept yourself as you are, you will have trouble inviting others into your life who do, too. If ever you find yourself unable to accept who you really are or are struggling with feelings of shame, then it is time to seek help.

Mental illness

Mental illness can take many different shapes and forms. According to research, it is thought that as many as 25% of the world’s population suffers from a mental disorder of some kind. These disorders include eating disorders, such as binge eating and bulimia, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), anxiety, and depression. If you suspect that you may have a mental illness, it is imperative that you seek help at a treatment center like These centers have experienced professionals who are trained to help you.


Even though you are surrounded by others like you, being a member of the LGBTQ community can often make you feel isolated. Many people may crave that feeling of being ‘normal’ and resent the fact that the rest of society prevents them from achieving that goal. Remember, these feelings are common; however, they can also be a sign of a more sinister problem, such as depression or a break-up—where it’s hard dating after the break-up, which needs to be addressed by a professional.

It can often help to speak to other members of the community for recommendations in terms of where they felt the most comfortable and ‘seen.’ In many instances, you will also be able to find help and peace by simply confiding in others who are like you and who are going through similar experiences. Often, all that you really need in order to feel alright again is to know that you are not alone and that there are people out there who really understand you. This is the reason why a wonderful support system is so very important to have during trying times. Remember, asking for help when you need it is not a weakness. It is strength!
