How to Jingle If You Are Single

With its romantic lights, glittering parties, and family gatherings the holiday season may seem like the worst time of year to be single. However, it is actually a wonderful opportunity to meet someone new. As a matchmaker, I see opportunity for new love around every corner, and I’m here to share with you a few tips for meeting that special someone before the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve.

One thing is for certain: you won’t meet someone new sitting at home, so make it a point to get out and about this November and December. Rather than online shopping for gifts, put time aside to explore local offerings. Ask a fellow shopper for their opinion on a gift. Take a break to enjoy coffee at a cozy local spot, and perhaps start up a conversation with the attractive stranger at the next table. The festive atmosphere of the season brings people together and breaks down social barriers more than any other time of year.

The abundance of holiday parties should also be seen as an opportunity. Rather than focus on your lack of a plus one, accept all invitations and make it a point to meet as many people as possible. While the person you are chatting with might be taken, they may also have a single friend, sibling, co-worker, or neighbor they’d like to introduce you to. Better yet, there are likely to be other fun singles at the party. Strike up a conversation!

In addition, this time of year is perfect for reconnecting with old friends. Make time to share a cup of cheer with someone you haven’t seen in a while. Many singles meet new people through existing contacts, and sometimes those contacts need a little nudge. Additionally, simply being out in a crowded bar or restaurant makes you more likely to meet someone new than laying on your couch watching Love Actually for the twenty-seventh time.

The holidays are also a wonderful time to give back, and there are many volunteer opportunities available. Empathy and kindness are excellent qualities in a partner, and falling in love with a fellow volunteer while serving those in need makes an excellent “how we met” story.

As a matchmaker, I love the holiday season. There’s a special magic in the air this time of year and anything seems possible. It makes the heart warm and open, and I encourage you to use that to your advantage!

Happy holidays, and happy dating!
