'THICK' Comes to Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

THICK film

Community sponsors IndieCapitol and Tagg Magazine are sponsoring two consecutive movie screenings of “THICK” in Baltimore, MD and Washington, D.C. Described as the first LGBT urban crime boss thriller, “THICK” follows the storyline of Theresa James (Tia Dae), a lesbian who runs illegal businesses in her neighborhoods for added financial gain. Set in context of the 2010 financial recession, James struggles to regain a foothold in her underworld, professional, and personal relationships as many in her life turn against her.

“We play with the tropes of criminal underworlds that we normally see, but we put a strong, intelligent, hardcore woman in the leading role,” says Anthony Greene, writer, producer, and director of the film. “Instead of casting a destitute mother, we want to uplift that persona and change how we see women, especially black women, and LGBT women in film.”

So far the community reaction has been overwhelmingly positive as this film seeks to revolutionize the way gay and lesbian characters are portrayed in mainstream media.

“We don’t want anyone to look at her [James] as anyone who is different. She just happens to be a lesbian,” says Cheryl Brown, who also wrote, directed, and produced the film. “Yes, she’s a lesbian, but I can enjoy a movie about a woman crime boss and not have to worry about an exploitative genre like we see in other movies.”

The film “THICK” is just the first of a three-part trilogy that is sure to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

D.C. readers and community members are invited to join Zami DC and the creators of “THICK” for a very special screening and discussion on Wednesday, April 16 at Busboys and Poets. Both Greene and Brown will join cast members of the film to participate in a brief Q&A after the film. For more information on the Washington, D.C Busboys and Poets screening, or to purchase tickets, click here. Guests can purchase tickets online or at the door. Seats are limited to the first 100 people.

For readers in the Baltimore area, the second screening of this must-see film will take place at Baltimore’s Landmark Harbor East Theater on April 17 at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit TaggFest. Interested community members can purchase $13 tickets before April 7 by clicking on the Tugg event page.

Organizers are looking forward to the community’s support of the movie, which shouldn’t prove to be too difficult considering “THICK” is a promising fan favorite that explores the timeless themes of money, power, and betrayal in a way that both LGBT persons and their allies can appreciate.
