The nation’s largest organization of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and allied legal professionals released its 2014 “40 Under 40” list today, recognizing the country’s most accomplished young LGBT legal professionals.
There are very few organizations in our community that are as dedicated to D.C.’s LGBTQ youth as Supporting and Mentoring Youth Advocates and Leaders (SMYAL). From building self-confidence to developing critical life skills in young people, SMYAL youth are trained and mentored to be leaders in their community.
In Chicago, December of 1924, Henry Gerber and six other men started the first known organization in the United States to focus on gay rights. Funded almost exclusively by Gerber, the organization published two newsletters titled, Friendship and Freedom.
More often than not, the LGB community omits and neglects the people and importance of the T in our acronym. Despite being dubbed by various news outlets as “The next civil rights frontier”, it is all too easy to misunderstand, misrepresent and misplace the transgender community.
