Sapphic reality shows are few and far between and Netflix has a treat for us—Season Two of The Ultimatum: Queer Love.
What is The Ultimatum?
Queer couples come to the show because one partner wants to get married and the other does not. One issues an ultimatum to the other—get married or break up. The show’s approach to this relationship crossroads is to have the couples break up upon arrival to date (and live with!) one of the other contestants for three weeks. Then the original couples come back together for three weeks to see if they missed each other or saw something outside of their relationship they liked better. The finale shows couples making their decision, either with a proposal or a break-up. For those that break up, there’s always a chance they might leave with the contestant they were with for the first three weeks.
One of the couples from Season One is still together and engaged—Sam Mark and Aussie Chau. Will any of this season’s six couples get engaged? Let’s meet them.
All of the couples seem to have one of two issues: one partner doesn’t believe in the institution of marriage at all even though they’re happy to stay together forever, or there is an actual issue in the relationship making them hesitant, like long-term goals not lining up. They’ve been together between one and half years and 10 years and everyone is between the age of 25 and 30. And we’ve got our first couple without one high femme in it with Kyle and Bridget, who both use she/they pronouns.
Astrological Compatibility
Netflix has given us all the details on the couples, including their signs. What’s their compatibility based on that?
Britney (Virgo) issued AJ (Libra) the ultimatum. Virgos and Libras are very different, with the first being extroverted and the second being introverted. Britney’s bio says she is an entrepreneur who loves dancing and AJ’s says she’s an administrative assistant who doesn’t want to come in second place to Britney’s business ambitions, so it lines up. Sources say these two signs can complement each other well and are likely to have good relationships with Libras grounding Virgos and Virgos helping Libras loosen up.
- Haley (Taurus) issued Pilar (Libra) the ultimatum. They’ve been together 10 years, which is lots of love for two signs ruled by Venus, the planet of love. Just like Libra and Taurus, one is extroverted and the other introverted, but are very compatible with balancing each other. Venus can really shine on them!
- Kyle (Leo) issued Pilar (Libra) the ultimatum. Leos and Libras are considered a very highly compatible match. Marriage is a nonnegotiable for Kyle but Bridget sees it as unnecessary even though she does see a forever with Kyle. Libras present as easy-going (even though they have a stubborn side), so this tracks. They both talk about the electric energy between them in their bios, which is right in line for what you’d expect in a Leo-Libra pair.
- Marie (Virgo) issued Mel (Taurus) the ultimatum. These two signs are compatible as well. Both value a stable life with a loyal companion, but Mel feels “there’s a few things we need to get in order” before walking down the aisle. Both practical and grounded, these two Earth signs could make it if everything falls into place.
- Dayna (Gemini) issued Magan (Taurus) the ultimatum. Their bios say that Megan’s anxious attachment style and Danya’s avoidant attachment style is the main point of friction in the relationship, which makes sense with their signs. This is the first pairing that is just possibly or moderately compatible, while all the other couples’ signs fit together very well.
- Ashley (Virgo) issued Marita (Pisces) the ultimatum. Pisces and Virgo are exactly opposite each other on the zodiac wheel which can be perfectly balancing, but also cause issues. Ultimately, they’re often compatible. Marita describes her romantic nature (typical for her sign) and Ashley describes her desire for consistency and loyalty (also typical of her sign).
We have mostly Earth and Air signs here—you can imagine which wants to be grounded in marriage and which wants to fly free. We can’t wait to see the drama unfold.
