Names: Heather Ann Smith & Heather Marie Abrams
Ages: Heather Ann, 42; Heather Marie, 34
Professions: Heather Ann is an Executive Assistant and Heather Marie is a graduate student earning a master’s in IT/Cybersecurity.
City, State: Manassas, VA
Date of Wedding: December 13, 2014
The Big Day: The ceremony took place on the steps of the Old Stone House at Manassas National Battle Field. We are avid hikers and often hike the Battlefield trails. Heather Ann has an affinity for historic places and we were both drawn to the house itself. Many historical photos were taken on the steps and we feel a sense of past, present, and future all at once in that place. It was a casual wedding with no formal wedding party. We had no real theme other than love and “yay”! We wore winter hues in “Fifty Shades of G[r]ay” with red being our accent color.
Our nieces sprinkled rose petals on the steps prior to the vows. Heather Ann carried a simple bouquet of red roses and wore the fiercest red lipstick. The reception took place at Heather Marie’s family’s home in Manassas, Virginia. Our dear, long-time friend, an attorney, petitioned the court for permission to be our legal celebrant and performed the ceremony for us. Our cake was a gloriously shimmery snowflake ensemble filled with delicious chocolate and chocolate mousse and custard.
The Firsts:
First meeting: In the slug lines in 2011. A friend of a friend introduced us when slugging to and from work via the Horner Road/19th Street commuter slug lines.
First date: October 12, 2012
First kiss: October 12, 2012
When They Knew: I knew the moment I met Heather Marie that she was “the one”. It was just an energy I felt. We were both with other people at the time. Our friendship developed and I finally got her attention. The day after our first date was a beautiful autumn day and Fleetwood Mac was playing on the radio. I heard the lyrics, “won’t you lay me down in the tall grass and let me do my stuff.” So, I said to Heather Marie that I would love to go lay down somewhere under a tree together and soak up some of this day. She immediately drove to a park and found a tree. We sat under the tree on that beautiful day and in that moment we both knew it was going to be us. We actually got that tree tattooed on each of our arms for her birthday back in April. And, we often visit “our tree” where we still leave love notes for each other.
The Proposal: There wasn’t one. We mutually decided to marry and made all of our decisions together.
The Ring(s): Simple, eco-responsible infinity bands made by Dogeared.
Honeymoon: On our couch! Heather Marie is still working on finals.
Looking into the Future: Heather Ann has an adult daughter and we enjoy being grandparents to her three children with another on the way. One day, we hope to build a cabin by a river in West Virginia where we can spend our free time and weekends with our families and friends.
